Courses.
I routinely build new courses and try out new pedagogical endeavors.
Here are a few recent projects:
Modern Latin American History through testimonio and self-expression:
In this course, I rebuilt the standard survey to make it centered on the experiences of individuals rather than the decisions of nations. We read four auto-biographies, watched four films, and focused on active pedagogies in the classroom including small discussions and close readings.
Syllabus
Animals in History:
This is a fun course. We consider how animals have shaped or participated in human history, globally. It's idiosyncratic, incomplete, and inventive but it usefully blends global and environmental histories. Plus, we took an awesome field trip to ZooBoise!
Syllabus
Senior Seminar:
This is the capstone course for history majors and it involves writing a long and independent paper based on original research. There are lots of ways to teach it, here's one of mine.
Syllabus
Histories of Science, Technology and the Environment:
This course is a graduate seminar combining literature on the history of science and environmental history, mostly in the broader Americas.
