Community.
Perhaps no other time in history have individuals been able to belong to so many layers of community. There is the place we live and work, the natal place, the places in our imagination, and the ubiquitous digital pseudo-place. Each of these needs attention in its own way lest we act like the invasive beavers (see photo left) that build voraciously, leaving scarcely a tree standing. Today, all historians can and should be public historians because our tools of engagement have never been so accessible or so necessary.
